A contextual nudge, not a cognitive shove.

If we want to change behaviour, make it easy. If we don't... make it hard. If we want to change behaviour, go with a contextual nudge rather than a cognitive shove.

Organisations are increasingly under pressure to do more with less; less people and less resources. Employees are also under the same pressure; to achieve more outcomes in less time. So, we need to get creative with what we're doing and how we're doing it.

What do we mean?

Think of the content on your LMS or your workshop programs as shoves. They require someone to do something.

The goal is to have someone change their behaviour without overtly making them change their behaviour. A contextual nudge.

But how?

At Inspire Group, we use MINDSPACE as part of our learning design process when creating the experience to move someone from a current state to a desired future state.

MINDSPACE is a nine-letter mnemonic for the most robust influencers on behaviour that are driven largely, but not exclusively, by automatic and unconscious processes.

It was developed by Paul Dolan, a Professor of Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics and Political Science and other colleagues, while working with the UK government to bring about widespread population behaviour change in a range of areas.

MINDSPACE is deliberately in the form of a checklist so that policy makers can work through the elements, ensuring that they account for situational factors that they might otherwise be blind toWhen it comes to learning design, we build this checklist into our design process, so the nudges are integrated into the rhythms and rituals of the organisation and are more likely to stick.
